England and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by rugby icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales find themselves placed in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a major pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing echoes their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Group Draws

The Irish and the Scots also share a group once again, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each impressed as surprise packages in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools play out in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both England and the Irish all the way to the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
